 Jailed Kazakh Reporter Appeals To UN Ramazan Esergepov, the founder and chief editor of the Almaty-based "Alma-Ata Info," was sentenced last year to three years in prison for revealing state secrets in his newspaper in 2008. He says the case against him is politically motivated. More  Iranian Journalist, Activist Sentenced Iranian journalist and human rights activist Emadedin Baghi has been sentenced to one year in jail and banned from political activity for five years. More  In Ukraine, 'Rights Violations Increasing' The Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union says that corruption and human rights violations in Ukraine are on the rise and turning the country into a "feudal state." More  Jailed Azerbaijani Blogger's Appeal Rejected An Azerbaijani court has rejected an appeal by a jailed blogger seeking an early release from prison. More  Jailed Journalist Files Complaint Against Iran's Leaders A jailed Iranian journalist has warned that if his complaint against Iran's supreme leader, president, and chief prosecutor is not pursued he will appeal to international bodies. More  Belarusian Opposition Activist Has Guilty Verdict Overturned A court in the southeastern Belarusian region of Homel has annulled the sentence given to a Belarusian opposition activist for avoiding military service. More  Beating Hospitalizes Serbian Journalist Teofil Pancic, a journalist for the independent Belgrade weekly "Vreme" and an RFE/RL columnist, was attacked by unknown assailants who beat him with a metal bar on a public bus late on July 24. More The four police officers were convicted of beating Sergei Udavikhin to death after detaining him following an altercation at a bar in the city of Chelyabinsk in November 2008. More  City Bans Protests During Patriarch Visit The Dnipropetrovsk city council in eastern Ukraine banned pickets during the visit of Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill. More  Tajik Prosecutor Targets Forerunner's Son The son of former Tajik Prosecutor-General Bobojon Bobokhonov has been arrested on corruption charges, the latest in a string of moves initiated against current or former judicial officials by Bobokhonov's successor. More  Armenian TV Station's Uncertain Future The owner of an independent Armenian television station has predicted that the administration of President Serzh Sarkisian will try to take it off the air in the next few years. More Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani was originally sentenced to death by stoning, but the sentence was postponed following a campaign by her grown children and outcry in the West, among other places, as well as from Iranian and international human rights organizations.
