Why Iran Is Different On first glance, it looks like an archetypal no-brainer; a large Middle Eastern country with a repressive regime and a simmering, angry protest movement. More So-called "smart sanctions," which target individuals rather than governments or big institutions, are intricate affairs that require a fair amount of bureaucratic maintenance and fine-tuning. But this may be worth the extra effort. More Both Mehdi Karrubi and Mir Hossein Musavi have remained defiant despite numerous calls for their trial and, most recently, their execution. Their wives, who are reportedly also under house arrest, have also been outspoken and both have criticized Iran's leadership and human rights abuses. More Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad -- whose fiercely disputed reelection in June 2009 sparked unprecedented street protests that were met with a brutal response that included killings, mass roundups and show trials, and alleged torture and disappearances of detainees -- talking about Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi's response to mounting unrest targeting his 42-year hold on power. More Abdolkarim Soroush, a prominent thinker and Islamic scholar now living in the US, has blasted Iranian officials over what he describes as the physical and psychological torture of his son-in-law. More A Serbian pro-democracy NGO comprising activists who spearheaded the overthrow of former President Slobodan Milosevic and assisted in the colored revolutions in Georgia and Ukraine, has now taken its know-how to the Middle East. More Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reiterated his insistence that the protests convulsing Arab states are "Islamic" at a time when Iranian security forces are repressing demonstrations against Tehran's theocratic regime. Khamenei's latest comments came on Sunday (February 20) as opposition Green Movement supporters, also claiming inspiration from the Arab protests, took to the streets for the second time in a week. More We posted yesterday an account from a member of Iran's Green Movement of the February 14 anti-government protest in Tehran. More An Iranian hacker who goes by the name "Arash" has spoken to RFE/RL's Radio Farda about his work with the enigmatic online collective Anonymous, members of which claim to be part of a vast cyberarmy working on behalf of the Iranian opposition and other movements. More Here are excerpts from the account of a young woman who says she participated in the February 14 protest in Tehran, which reportedly attracted tens of thousands of people. More Sanee Zhaleh and Mohammad Mokhtari, the two young Iranians who were shot dead in the February 14 protests, are now being referred to as "Green martyrs," along with about 70 other citizens who lost their lives in the 2009 protests over the disputed reelection of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.
